well for those who follow the tennis you will all know that Tim henman made a miraculous comeback yesterday in a glorious five set match. And once again, the media are all asking "is this tim's year?". And when he goes out, which he will, because he just isn't quite good enough to win, they will say "he's past it, this should be his last wimbledon". So why is it that over here we build up our sports stars and make them out to be great, until they fall, and when they fall, we walk all over them. Reality is, that although Tim henman is not world number 1, he's not that bad either - he's ranked in the top 10 in the world, and consistently he gets to quarter/semi finals of tournaments. Sure he doesn't win, but do you have to win to be good enough?
this is something that constantly annoys me with our media though! they just can't help themselves and quite ludicrously hype people and events beyond all sense of reality! how many times have the press at the beginning of a world cup, for example, predicted who england will meet at the semi-final or even final stage of the competition regardless of the fact that, especially in times passed, we simply haven't been good enough to get to those stages! then, having done that, when the team or person falls short of expectation what do they do? you guessed it! instead of considering that they may have been wrong in the first place! they slate said team or person for not being good enough!
the thing with tim is that yes! he is a very talented tennis player! however he has never been the very best! instead of acknowledging that fact though the media insist every year that this will be his year! he will win it! blar blar blar! i'm not saying that he doesn't have a chance! don't miss understand me. what i am saying is that we need to be realistic about these things and realize that while he has a chance there are simply better players out there and that in order for him to win wimbledon, especially at this stage of his career, he is going to need an enormous slice of luck with extra cherries on top and stacks of clotted cream!
i'm not saying stop hoping! brilliant and unexpected things do happen in sport! take the recent victory of the Bangladesh cricket team over the purportedly infallible australians as proof of that! but keep realistic! if we can manage to do that then maybe, just maybe it can happen for tim if for no better reason than, he won't feel under unbelievable pressure every time he steps out onto center court!
Do we really care about a bunch of overpaid, overhyped, sportsmen, hitting a damn ball over a net...
yes some people do, the same as some people care about a bunch of overpaid, over hyped drivers, wizzing round a race track ... just so long as their tyre company allows mind.
I couldn't care less about F1 after that travesty.... and you will probably find that the tennis fans are earing far more than the average wage...entry to wimbers is beyond the pocket of most people, tennis always has been an elitist sport, and that is why I dislike the attention give to it especially at the expense of more minority sports, that the ah hem common people play...
I wasn't just referring to tennis really though, just using tennis as an example as it is currently all over the news what with wimbledon and all and ... think the top earners in football are far better paid than the tennis stars ...
Of course but the problem is, apart from the british lions rugby team doing very well in NZ, we really dont have many sportsmen/women to brag about. So every summer, we enter the silly season, and endure the endless bragging and this is purely observation, but there is nothing like an englishman or woman, for bragging about their sports heroes...
Well timmy didnt last long eh gaun yoursel Russia!
yeh, beaten by someone 150 places below him! way to go!
I love the Russians the best game has to be Shaparova against Venus Williams, that youngster just destroyed her,you could almost see the hunger in the Russian's playing, she was going to win if it killed her...if only we could show the same determination in sport and life....
